Since 2009, The Rapunzel Project’s mission has been to create awareness of the existence and efficacy of scalp cooling therapy, to help chemotherapy patients save their hair.
Reimbursement is coming...
Through advocacy by patients, medical professionals, and supporters, legislation requiring insurance reimbursement for scalp cooling/cold capping is happening!

LAWS ALREADY ENACTED*
- New York, first in the nation, is requiring private insurers to reimburse for capping as of 1/1/26.
- Louisiana’s law is already in effect for new policies, and will take full effect 1/1/27.
- West Virginia’s law will go into effect 1/1/27.
- Maryland’s law will go into effect 1/1/27.
- Connecticut’s law will go into effect 1/1/27.
*Please note that every state is handling this legislation differently, and these initial laws are unlikely to cover all patients. Some states will need additional rounds of legislation to further expand access.
WHO IS NEXT?
Ohio, California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, Michigan and Florida are all known to be working on this; some states are actively in the legislative process, others are in earlier stages.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
- Join the Facebook Group, National Scalp Cooling Advocacy, to connect with other advocates, find out what is going on in your state, and get involved.
- Seek legislative sponsors in your state government. We can connect them to their peers in other states for guidance and help recruit supporters to testify for the legislation. Reach out to National Scalp Cooling Advocacy for suggestions and support in finding and cultivating legislative sponsors.
- Advocate for the broadest possible language, ideally referencing both machine and manual caps. The goal of this legislation is to make scalp cooling/cold capping accessible/affordable for all eligible patients. It is NOT to tell patients and their doctors which caps to use – they will choose machine caps or manual caps based on what is optimal for their circumstances.
